Nawaz Sharif’s arrival delayed to October 21 – A huge reversal by PMLN?

In the previous interview, a question was asked from the then Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif stated that his elder brother and PMLN’s Supremo Nawaz Sharif would surely return in September. It seems PMLN isn’t sure about the favorable and level playing conditions in Pakistan, therefore, delayed his arrival to October 2023, after Shehbaz Sharif met his elder brother in London. This statement culminates in a decision that marks a pivotal moment in Pakistani politics.

Announcement in London

Shehbaz along with party supremo in London, addressed the media and stated, “We held a long meeting with the senior leadership of the party, and we have decided that our leader will return to Pakistan in October.” This revelation has initiated a debate in Pakistan about his possible arrival, case settlement, and lastly rejuvenated his party supporters.

Uncertainty surrounding the Return Date

While the announcement is momentous in Pakistani Politics, Shehbaz did not specify an exact date for Nawaz’s return. However, sources have reported that the elder Sharif’s homecoming is likely to be on October 15, 2023, but when we contacted PMLN leadership, they repeated the same words that “His return would in October 2023 but a specific date has been decided yet” for his arrival.

Purpose of Shehbaz’s Visit to London & Nawaz Sharif’s lengthy absence

PMLN states that the sole purpose of Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to London this week was to see his elder brother and deliberate upon key political issues leading up to the general elections. PMLN Supremo absence from Pakistan dates back to November 2019 marking almost 4 years, when he left for his medical treatment following his conviction in a corruption case.

Since then, the elder Sharif, PMLN Supremo has not returned to Pakistan and continues to face multiple legal cases. In February of the year 2020, he was announced an absconder, and in 2020, he was declared a proclaimed offender by the courts of Pakistan. Another important facet of the whole discussion is, that Pakistani Courts never asked his brother, who was his guarantor and who remained Prime Minister for 16 whole months.

Ongoing Speculation and Previous Predictions

Since the ouster of PTI Chairman Imran Khan, there have been multiple instances of PML-N stalwarts claiming that PMLN Supremo would return “next month.” On August 10, newsbroadcast.pk reported that the elder Sharif would possibly return to Pakistan in September, on the claim of Shehbaz Sharif. It seems as PMLN leader Khawaja Asif stated that PMLN supremo would return to Pakistan only on one condition and that is “when he has zero risk”.

Addressing Allegations and Promoting Accountability

Shehbaz Sharif, in his recent media interaction in London, discussed the allegations against PMLN supremo in the Panama Papers scandal. He rubbished the court verdicts and stated that “All of you know that his name was not there in Panama [papers] … he was included [in the investigation] through a conspiracy, and no action was taken against other people whose names were actually there in Panama [papers].”

He reaffirmed that PMLN supremo’s commitment to returning to Pakistan is unwavering, and he shall face all the legal proceedings and will easily get acquittal from all legal cases.

PML-N’s Stance on Elections

In a reply to a question about upcoming elections, Shehbaz Sharif stressed that PMLN and other coalition parties had dissolved the national assemblies in light of the “Spirit of the constitution”. He further stated that PMLN is free of any responsibility since it’s now the Chief Election Commissioner’s responsibility to conduct general elections in Pakistan. He further expressed his commitment to facilitating free, fair, and transparent elections in the leadership of elder Sharif.

Allegations of Political Victimization

Shehbaz Sharif also stated that his family has faced severe political victimization during the PTI government and tons of “fake cases” were registered against them, but the Hon’ble Courts have exonerated the entire family, which reveals their innocence.
