Pakistan’s ICC World Cup 2023 Squad Announcement

Pakistan Cricket Legendary batter and Chief Selector Inzamam ul Haq unveiled Pakistan’s 18-member squad for the ICC World Cup 2023 in a press conference in Lahore. Notably, Pakistan’s ICC World Cup 2023 Squad Announcement includes Hasan Ali while excluding star fast bowler Naseem Shah due to his injury sustained during the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka. The event is hosted by arch-rivals and Pakistan’s campaign in the World Cup will kick off on October 6 against the Netherlands at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Hyderabad, India.

Hasan Ali’s Inclusion and Naseem Shah’s Injury

In place of Naseem Shah, Pakistan Cricket Board has gone with Hassan Ali, who has recently performed well in the Sri Lankan T20 League and looks in good rhythm. The decision by the Chief Selector Inzamam ul Haq has raised eyebrows. When questioned by the media representatives, the Chief Selector backed the decision citing Hassan Ali to be having experience with the new ball and his ability to elevate the dressing room’s atmosphere with his positive energy. It is very unfortunate for cricket enthusiasts in Pakistan to know the exclusion of Naseem Shah due to his shoulder injury, making his comeback highly unfeasible. The scans suggest that Naseem Shah’s recovery may extend beyond the ICC World Cup 2023.

Team Composition and Selection Criteria for ICC World Cup 2023

Chief Selector Inzamam ul Haq while talking to the media, revealed that the Pakistan Cricket Team remains largely unchanged except for Hassan Ali in place of Naseem Shah. Chief Selector of Pakistan National Cricket Team stated that continuity is crucial for our cricket team since the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023 is a prestigious event and it’ll need experienced players who can perform well under pressure. In addition to the above, the chief selector hinted at potential changes, if any player performed well in the domestic circuit, being a primary criterion for selection.

Recent Performances by the Pakistan Cricket Team

Except for the recent Asia Cup 2023 hosted by Pakistan/Sri Lanka, the Pakistan Cricket Team has performed exceptionally well under the leadership of Babar Azam. Pakistan team reached the finals/semi-finals of a couple of ICC events in the past two years with tons of above-par individual performances. During the recent Asia Cup 2023, Pakistan, as always displayed their fast-bowling prowess with the likes of Shaheen Shah Afridi (The Swing Master), Haris Rauf (Sheer Pace) and Naseem Shah (A brilliant seamer at pace).

Many Sports Journalist have been criticizing Hassan Ali’s inclusion due to his lack of form and injury prone physique in the recent years. Moreover, famous sports anchors and former test cricketers have also been witness criticizing the selection committee over non-inclusion of Imad Waseem in the national cricket team.
