Shah Mahmood Qureshi arrested under Official Secrets Act

In a surprising turn of events, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) arrested Shah Mahmood Qureshi, PTI Vice Chairman, from his house in Islamabad. Shah Mahmood Qureshi has been booked under the Official Secrets Act, 1923, in connection with a diplomatic cypher case, in which Imran Khan waved at the Islamabad Jalsa after his ouster.

Investigation into Diplomatic Cable

The FIA is currently interrogating the claim of PTI chief Imran Khan regarding a missing diplomatic cable, which he cites to be evidence of a “foreign conspiracy” against his government when he was the Prime Minister of Pakistan. Imran Khan has stated that immediately tabling the No-Confidence Motion in National Assembly against him was a sign that it was all directed by the American government with the collaboration of the then Chief of Army Staff Qamar Javed Bawa.

Later on, Imran Khan changed his statement with a clarification that it was COAS who conspired against him by appointing Hussain Haqqani to lobby against him in the US Congress, hinting at the initiation of conspiracy from Pakistan and reaching the United States.

Charges Against Qureshi

The FIR filed against Former Foreign Minister Mr. Shah Mahmood Qureshi is registered under sections 5 and 9 of the Official Secrets Act, along with Section 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code. On the complaint of Ministry of Interior Secretary Yousaf Naseem Khokhar, instant FIR has been registered for Qureshi. Further reports are awaited in this regard.

Confirmation by Arrest

The Interim Interior Minister Sarfaraz Bugti has confirmed while talking to the media that Mr. Shah Mahmood Qureshi has been arrested in connection to the diplomatic cable. He further stressed that the détente would be brought before the court and will attempt to prosecute the case in a professional manner.

PTI’s Response

PTI through their social media channels has responded that Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s arrest was completely illegal and reported that a large police contingent was involved in the arrest.

Qureshi’s Press Conference before his arrest

In a press conference, Shah Mahmood Qureshi clarified that his meeting with Australian High Commissioner Neil Hawkins was focused on the political situation of Pakistan and denied all rumors about seeking relief for the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan, who is arrested and detained in Attock Jail, Punjab. Reporters asked him about cipher’s release, but Mr. Qureshi refused to comment on the diplomatic cable.

Moreover, reporters also asked him different questions about the division in PTI Leadership, but he dismissed all allegations and stated that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf is stronger and more connected than ever.

Allegations of Traitors

PTI leader and Advocate of Imran Khan in multiple cases, Sher Afzal Khan Marwat alleged the presence of “traitors” within the party’s core committee in the tweet, but later deleted his posts, when Shah Mahmood Qureshi was asked about the subject, he again refused to comment on the subject.

General Elections Delay

Shah Mahmood Qureshi announced during the press conference that PTI would move the Supreme Court of Pakistan to address the delay in general elections and urged the other political players to express their stance on the election delay matter.
